In May 2004, my twin brother, Peter Kehinde Mogaji was employed as Lecturer in Banking and Finance at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti. Over the years, he has been experiencing intimidation, retrospective victimisation, abuse of office and ‘retribution’ in the hands of the ‘power- that-be’ at the Federal polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti. His confirmation of appointment granted to be effective in May 2006 (and published in the Polytechnic’s newsletter) was withheld up till now for no genuine reason. His promotions have since been dashed. About six postgraduate (PhD) study leave attempts made by him since 2007 were either unattended or cruelly denied. A deputy registrar that has the advantage of being the custodian of personnel records negatively used his office and abused his powers to distort his personnel records in order to nail him at all costs, for perceived personal reasons (we can imagine what will happen if such an individual is made a registrar of a polytechnic/university in future). Between 2007 and 2008, my brother made an appeal against this to the Office of the Polytechnic’s Rector and later instituted a grievance procedure on this issue, unfortunately, up till date there is no response to these from the Office of the Rector. On this same issue, he made an appeal to the Polytechnic’s Governing Council in July 2009, up till now he has not received any response.

There were insinuations and lies against his career by the registry staff who wanted his career destroyed at all cost. Notable among this career development thwarting lies was a false report by the Secretary of the Staff Development Committee (who operates in same office with this deputy registrar) that my brother did not apply for a study leave when he actually did. My brother was made to suffer double jeopardy and ‘retribution’ for vehemently rising against the abuse of office by the deputy registrar in point. This might also be the reason why our junior brother’s name missed out of a post-test list of interviewee for the position of technologists late 2008. This appears to be a popular vengeance tool of these oppressors operating in the polytechnic. In a dubious and ambiguous manner, my twin brother was made to suffer this double jeopardy in August 2010 by causing him to face an investigation committee for an allegation made in a 2007 petition by a yet-to be-identified-person. The report of the earlier disciplinary committee (to the then Rector) in 2007 exonerated my brother and absolved him of the allegation. Yet, the then Registrar and this Deputy Registrar (who joined heads together to take a cruel unilateral decision
against my brother even before the 2007 committee concluded their findings) felt unsatisfied with the 2007 committee report.
From the information I have, my twin brother has never been queried for once in his over 7-year career as a lecturer and the departmental examinations officer. He told me that he never scored less than an overall ‘B’ grade in his annual appraisal since assuming duty in the polytechnic. As at mid 2009 (within five years of employment) my brother has written six textbooks for use in the department of banking and finance. He takes every opportunity of semester breaks to seek for current and up to date information on banking and finance. He is always on his toes, working relentlessly, day and night on updating these textbooks and write academic research papers. I have never noticed him closed from office before 7pm. Yet, in order to hang this hardworking lecturer, those who displayed the lack of the expected knowledge of all that lecturing job entails and who never took the pain to sample and analyse his products have been calling him a bad name, after drawing faulty and bias conclusions. In spite of the frustration, depression, retribution, the lack of motivation to perform well and the pervading uncertainties surrounding his career development/progression, my twin brother was able to put up good performances as lecturer and his departmental examinations officer, given testimonies from his co-staff members and his current and former students I interacted with.

However, due to the extent with which human body system can absorb frustrations, trauma, depressions and mental torture, my twin brother was diagnosed this year for a life-threatening ailment which is currently recovering from. It surprising to hear him remarked that throughout his critical period on sick bed, there was no single official get-well message from this people who might prefer him dead by now. During this period of illness, I am aware of the inhumane official decisions aimed at starving my twin brother to death, but he is now recuperating and he will surely survive.

If it is a fact that those who are one way or the other linked with those who contested for the position of the current position of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti are being persecuted, I may then be suspecting that the prolonged/renewed trouble and double jeopardy of my twin brother might have also been fueled by his link with our brother in-law (a professor and a dean of faculty at the University of Abeokuta) who stood for the position of the Rector of the Polytechnic. My twin brother actually did photocopies of documents and submitted the application on behalf of this professor for this position.
Since my brother has exploited and exhausted all internal avenues within the Polytechnic to save his soul, all to no avail, I am making this compassionate call to the Honourable Minister for Education, Professor (Mrs) Ruqayyahtu Rufa’i to look into the matter and save my twin brother from this long term trauma, intimidation, tribulations, victimisation, abuse of office and ‘retribution’ in the hands of these ‘powers- that-be’ and what appears ‘cabalism’ at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, so that his very long over-due recommended confirmation of appointment and recommended promotions will be released to him. I am sure that the issue of abuse of office by a public officer will be of interest to Justice Yakubu Umar of the Code of Conduct Tribunal. I know that Dr. Masa’udu Adamu Kazaure, the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education will not want a bright lecturing career be wilfully destroyed by the determined destroyers.
